What is Carne Seca?

What is Carne Seca?

Carne seca is a type of beef jerky that is popular in many Latin American countries, particularly in Mexico and the southwestern United States. The term "carne seca" literally means "dry meat," and it is typically made by drying thin slices of beef in the sun or in a low-temperature oven until it is completely dehydrated. This process helps to preserve the meat, making it last for months without the need for refrigeration.

Carne seca is often made using lean cuts of beef, such as flank steak or sirloin, which are sliced thinly against the grain to ensure a chewy texture. The meat is then marinated in a mixture of spices and seasonings, which can vary depending on the region and the individual recipe. Common ingredients include salt, pepper, cumin, garlic powder, chili powder, and oregano.

Once the meat has been marinated, it is hung up to dry in the sun or in a low-temperature oven. This process can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the humidity and temperature of the environment. Once the meat is completely dry, it is ready to eat.
